One fewer桃园 food spot: Daxi’s “Youji Century Glutinous Rice” announces closure

Yet another food shop in 桃园 has closed its doors. The well-known Daxi eatery “Youji Century Glutinous Rice” announced on its Facebook page that due to the inability to cope with the rapidly changing market, it has decided to cease operations starting today. The news has left many loyal fans shocked and saddened.

“Youji Century Glutinous Rice” has been delighting 桃园 food lovers for a century and is now in its fourth generation of family ownership. Starting with the first generation selling from shoulder poles along the streets, it has since grown to not only have a physical store but also offer gift box services. Its plump, separate-grain glutinous rice is lightly salted and lightly oiled, making it not greasy at all. The owner insists on using wooden barrels to steam the rice and hand-stirring it daily to ensure delicious texture. It has long been a popular choice for weddings and full-moon celebrations, and is one of the must-try food spots when visiting Daxi.

However, due to concerns over physical exhaustion, as well as the fact that both daughters are married and the son works at TSMC with no one able to take over the business, “Youji Century Glutinous Rice” had originally planned to close on October 7. After requests from many regular customers, the closure was postponed until October 17. Going forward, it will only accept large gift box orders such as bridal rice cakes and full-moon glutinous rice.
