The historic scenic beauty “Beixiang Lake” from the Kangxi period in Zhuluo, which had disappeared for many years, has now been restored at Xianghu Park in Chiayi City. It is expected to open before September 30, offering a view of one of the ancient “Eight Scenic Spots of Zhuluo” —“Autumn Lotus at Beixiang”— through its picturesque lake reflections.

Both “Autumn Lotus at Beixiang” and “Fragrance of Lotus at North Lake” were documented as part of the Eight Scenic Spots of Zhuluo in Qing dynasty literature. During the Kangxi era, Beixiang Lake covered a vast area, and even during the Japanese colonial period and until 1978 (the 67th year of the Republic of China), smaller portions of the lake could still be seen. However, after the construction of Chiayi City’s northern drainage system, the water source diminished, causing the lake to gradually dry up. The land was later developed into residential and industrial areas. By 2002, Beixiang Lake had completely vanished. It wasn’t until the Chiayi City Government launched the Beixiang Lake Restoration Project, reconstructing the lake based on its 1945 appearance, that the lakeside beauty of the Kangxi period was brought back to life.

Beixiang Lake is located within Xianghu Park, which spans approximately 26.25 hectares, making it the second-largest park in Chiayi City. Since its development began in 2009 (the 8th year of the Republic of China), the project has included park construction, the renovation of the northern drainage trunk line, rerouting of Branch C, and the restoration of Beixiang Lake, with a total budget of around 300 million

In summer, North Xianghu Lake is replenished by ample rainfall. When the water level is near full, the lake shimmers brilliantly, and the greenery along the lakeside path—planted with golden dew flower shrubs and tree hedges—creates a lush, emerald-green carpet-like landscape, offering breathtaking scenery. In winter, although rainfall is scarce and the water level is lower, the lake does not dry up completely, presenting a uniquely serene charm of its own.
