Entire Carriage to Yourself: Japan’s New Sleeper Train “Twilight Express Mizukaze” Launches in 2017

Inheriting the soon-to-be-retired Twilight Express, JR West Japan’s newly designed sleeper train “Twilight Express Mizukaze” will officially debut in spring 2017. Recently, JR West Japan unveiled the interior design of the train, with the “luxury suite” that occupies an entire carriage drawing particular attention.

Designed with the concept of a “moving hotel,” the Twilight Express Mizukaze sleeper train consists of 10 carriages and can accommodate up to 30 passengers. The interior design is based on the Art Deco style popular in the early Showa period, incorporating refined wood materials to create a minimalist, nostalgic atmosphere.

The first and last carriages serve as observation decks, featuring large floor-to-ceiling windows offering 180-degree views of the scenery along the way. The lounge and dining carriages are located in carriages 5 and 6 respectively. Passengers can enjoy meals in the modern-style dining carriage while watching the chef’s cooking techniques in the open kitchen, all set against the backdrop of ever-changing mountain and sea landscapes for a relaxing dining experience.

The most eye-catching luxury suite aboard Mizukaze is located in carriage 7. In addition to the bedroom, it includes a bathroom with a bathtub, a living room, a dining area, and a private balcony—rare features even among sleeper trains worldwide. Other room types include 12 twin rooms distributed across carriages 2, 3, 8, and 9, while carriage 4 contains one twin room and two single rooms.
The Twilight Express Mizukaze sleeper train will primarily operate in the San’yō and San’in regions in the future, offering both two-day-one-night and three-day-two-night itineraries, though prices have yet to be announced.
