Confirmed!“Kaohsiung Light Rail” trial rides to begin on 10/16, bookings open from 8th

After going through multiple rounds of initial and final inspections, the Kaohsiung Light Rail finally received approval from the Ministry of Transportation on the 1st and obtained its operating license. The Kaohsiung City Mass Rapid Transit Bureau announced,the light rail will begin trial operations on October 16, with online and telephone booking applications opening on the 8th.

The Kaohsiung City Mass Rapid Transit Bureau stated that the light rail will be open to the public for trial rides from the 16th on the C1 Lizihnei Station to the C4 Kaisyuan Zhonghua Station. The first train departs at 9:00 AM, the last at 6:30 PM, with one train every 30 minutes, totaling 20 trains per day. Passengers will not be allowed to get on or off midway; they can ride from C1 to C4, then take a return trip back to C1.

The Kaohsiung Light Rail willbegin accepting group reservation bookings online or by phone starting from the 8th, with 120 spots available per trip.The Mass Rapid Transit Bureau specifically pointed out,passengers must use an EasyCard to tap in for the ride (no fare deduction), one card per person, sharing is not allowed. Those without an EasyCard will be refused boarding..

Additionally,each train will also accommodate 30 individual passengers. Members of the public will need to queue on-site to collect same-day trial ride vouchers. Distribution of vouchers for all daily trips begins at 8:30 AM each day during the trial period. Each person may collect a maximum of four vouchers, and only for the same trip..

The Kaohsiung City Mass Rapid Transit Bureau stated that through this riding event, in addition to allowing the public to familiarize themselves with the methods of using an EasyCard for self-ticket validation on the platform or inside the train, as well as independently pressing buttons to open and close doors—features distinct from those on the metro or buses—it also helps everyday commuters understand and adhere to the shared road space created by the light rail’s intersection routes, such as light rail right-of-way and the new concepts and facilities like transit signal prioritization. At the same time, it allows related agencies to accumulate early experience in supporting operations.
