Japan’s most beautiful foot onsen is here. As a volcanic island, Sakurajima has numerous hot spring streams flowing across it due to years of eruptions. In Tarumizu City on Sakurajima, there’s a foot onsen that travelers consider the most beautiful in all of Japan — where you can soak your feet while gazing at the Sakurajima volcano.

Sakurajima’s “Tarumizu Michi no Eki” is a seaside rest stop right next to the ocean. The small station sells a variety of locally grown fruits and vegetables, as well as fresh seafood. Strolling along the coast, you’ll find the foot onsen by the water, with Sakurajima volcano just across the sea. The volcano, which erupts nearly a thousand times a year, mostly quietly emits white smoke. Soaking your feet in the onsen while enjoying the view of the sea and the volcano is the greatest pleasure for the locals of Sakurajima.
