Lisbon is a capital built along the Atlantic coast. As the mouth of the Tagus River, it once provided excellent geographical conditions for Portugal’s maritime explorations — which is why it became Europe’s only capital situated on the Atlantic. It is one of Europe’s most renowned tourist cities and the most visited destination in Portugal, attracting over one million tourists each year. The Portuguese say that those who haven’t seen Lisbon have not truly seen beauty. The city remains lush and flower-filled all year round, resembling a charming and fragrant garden, with vast green spaces, including numerous parks, gardens, lawns, and green areas.
The architecture of the city is wonderfully diverse, featuring Romanesque, Gothic, Manueline, Baroque, modern, and postmodern styles. In addition, there are numerous memorial towers and monuments.
