Nuantang Geothermal Hot Spring in Pingfu Township

The Nuantang Hot Spring in Pingfu Township, Shangyou County, is situated 50 kilometers northwest of Shangyou County. It is located in the western part of the Central-Southern Jiangxi Uplift within the Cathaysia Block, at the intersection of the north-south Zhuguang Mountain structural belt and the east-west Nanling structural belt. The hot springs emerge as a cluster at the southern end of the Shangyou County geothermal field (hot spring area), in Nuantang Village, Shangzhai, Pingfu Township.

The Nuantang Hot Spring lies beneath a mountain ridge at an elevation of 420 meters, with the spring outlet at 300 meters above sea level. The water temperature is 39.5°C, and the flow rate is 2.81 liters per second. Pumping tests predict that with a well diameter of 0.2032 m and a drawdown of 7.20 m, the exploitable resource volume (Grade E) of geothermal water is 2,561 m³/day. Measurements show that the surface geothermal water temperature is 43°C, and the water is rich in Na⁺, F⁻, H₂SiO₃, and SO₄²⁻. The underground geothermal water in the Nuantang mining area contains 13.4 mg/L of fluoride and 93.14 mg/L of metasilicic acid, meeting or exceeding the levels considered to have "therapeutic value concentration" and "mineral water concentration." The geothermal water can be classified as silicic water and fluorine water, suitable for tourism, vacation, bathing, medical treatment, and heating. For example, Beijing’s Xiaotangshan Hot Spring is a bicarbonate-sulfate-sodium-type fluorine and metasilicic acid medical thermal mineral water, which has been used for medical rehabilitation for over 50 years. Clinical practice has shown that this hot spring has good therapeutic effects on skin diseases and arthritis. When comprehensive physiotherapy, exercise therapy, and medication are applied together, treatments for rheumatism, arthritis, musculoskeletal system diseases; hypertension and coronary heart disease; respiratory diseases such as tracheitis and asthma; digestive system diseases; and skin conditions like psoriasis and dermatitis generally show improvement, with some achieving significant efficacy.

The Nuantang mining area features favorable structures and lithological combinations for heat control, conduction, and storage. The northeast and northeast–east trending fault structures, along with their derived extensional fractures (both longitudinal and transverse), are well-developed, facilitating the storage and movement of groundwater and serving as effective heat-conducting channels. The water-blocking structures may allow the discovery of medium-to-low temperature to medium-to-high temperature geothermal water with relatively high temperatures and large discharges through geophysical exploration and other survey methods. The surrounding area boasts abundant tourism resources, including the notable Wuzhifeng Scenic Area and Qiyun Mountain Forest Landscape Reserve.

Due to historically poor transportation, the Nuantang Hot Spring mining area has not been fully developed or utilized, and is currently only used for civilian purposes such as seedling cultivation, seed soaking, and bathing. Surveys indicate that there is no other hot spring facility within a one-hour radius of Ganzhou City, while the drive from Ganzhou to Pingfu takes just one hour. Today, with the convenience of an extensive and interconnected road network, the hot spring mining area can be reached quickly and easily. Through appropriate development measures, it is possible to increase the water temperature and enhance the flow rate, enabling integrated development of the rich tourism resources alongside the Nuantang Hot Spring to maximize overall benefits.
