Mian County Tiandang Mountain
The Tiandang Mountain Scenic Area is situated in Huangjiagou Village, 3 kilometers north of Mian County’s county town. Backed by the main peak of Tiandang Mountain in the southern Qinling Mountains, it lies within a shallow hilly region, covering an area of 3,298 mu (including 1,800 mu of forested mountain land and 1,200 mu of orchards). The village is home to the famous ancient Three Kingdoms battlefield, Tiandang Mountain, Micang Mountain, and the sizable Buddhist sacred site Tian Deng Temple.

The scenic area overlooks the Han River and faces Dingjun Mountain in the distance. Surrounded by mountains and embraced by water, it boasts naturally exquisite scenery. The Tiandang Mountain Scenic Area is easily accessible—just a 10-minute drive or a half-hour walk from downtown Mian County. With its green trails like a fairyland, idyllic countryside dreamscape, lush tree cover, white walls with red tiles, humid climate, pavilions nestled amid surroundings, distant emerald-hued mountains, and a natural oxygen bar, a leisurely stroll here takes you through dense forests and bamboo groves, accompanied by birdsong and floral fragrance. Winding paths lead to serene spots, where ancient memories inspire reflection on the present. Explore relics of the Three Kingdoms, enjoy farm-style meals, take in today’s beautiful views, and find your mind and spirit completely at peace—you’ll be so enchanted you won’t want to leave. A comprehensive tourism destination integrating Three Kingdoms culture, eco-agricultural tours, agritainment, Tian Deng Temple visits, Pear Blossom Festival celebrations, and fruit-picking experiences has now taken shape in the Tiandang Mountain Scenic Area.

Tiandang Mountain stretches from the western bank of the Yan River in the east to Yindong Ridge and Leigong Mountain at Guan Shan Liang in the west, connects to Micang Mountain surrounded by peaks in the north, and faces Dingjun Mountain across the Han River in the south. Its main peak, Tiandeng Temple Ridge, directly overlooks the north gate of the county town—Tiandang Gate (no longer extant). Serving as the northern shield of the city, Tiandang Mountain forms a strategic triangle with Dingjun Mountain and the ancient Yangping Pass, acting as the western gateway to the Hanzhong Basin. It controls the key routes between Sichuan and Shaanxi to the west and guards the southern mouth of the ancient Chencang Road to the north, making it a contested military stronghold throughout history. In the 22nd year of the Jian’an era during the Eastern Han Dynasty (217), after Cao Cao occupied Hanzhong, intending to maintain a prolonged standoff with Shu, he stationed heavy troops here and stockpiled tens of millions of sacks of grain. At that time, “The grain supply at Tiandang Mountain was the lifeblood of Hanzhong’s soldiers; if lost, there would be no Hanzhong!” In the 24th year of Jian’an (219), when Liu Bei attacked Hanzhong, he sent Huang Zhong to seize the grain here, engaging in battle with Cao’s forces. After Liu Bei secured Hanzhong, he relied on this mountain for troop garrisons. In the 5th year of Jianxing (227), when Zhuge Liang advanced into Guanlong, he used this mountain as a base. The mountain “once had a temple for Marquis of Huaiyin (Han Xin), supposedly because his secret crossing of the Chencang route passed through here” (from the New Annals of Mian County). The ancient trees around Tian Deng Temple in the valley of Tiandang Mountain are towering, creating a tranquil and elegant atmosphere. Beside the temple is a spring that flows year-round, irrigating nearby fields. In front of the temple is a stone believed to be the very step-stone Huang Zhong used upon returning downhill from beheading Xiahou Yuan and returning to camp.
