The Mahamuni bronze Buddha statue stands about 4 meters tall, and there are many different legends and stories about its origin. What is certain is that in the 1870s and 1880s, a great fire destroyed the city of Mandalay, but the Buddha statue was miraculously preserved. The only damage was that the solid gold crown and other gold ornaments melted together. The restoration work continued until 1884. Nowadays, male devotees who flock here follow the tradition of placing gold leaf on the statue. Over the years, the accumulated gold leaf has reached a thickness of over 16 centimeters, causing the entire body of the statue to become deformed. This also demonstrates the immense popularity of the temple.
A significant number of monks reside around the Mahamuni Buddha Temple because they believe living here brings them protection from the Buddha. It is customary for young couples to visit the temple to kneel and pray before getting married, dressing in elaborate attire, creating a warm and festive atmosphere.
