The Turpan Desert Plants Garden, with an average elevation of about 95 meters below sea level, is a botanical garden built on the lowest-lying land on Earth. It is a tourist destination that blends natural landscapes with man-made attractions, and a desert oasis jointly created by local farmers and scientific workers. The garden has been rated as a National AAA-level scenic area.
Upon arrival, visitors are first greeted by rows of hedge formed by Mongolian sea-buckthorn, followed by a variety of rare plants such as tamarisk species, medicinal herbs, mouse melon species, calligonum species, and licorice species. The diversity here accounts for over 80% of China’s total desert plant distribution. As an inland arid desert region, the landscape here is truly breathtaking.
In addition, the garden features an artificial lake, which shimmers with ripples in spring and summer, surrounded by lush trees that make it feel like one has stepped into the Jiangnan region. There is also a karez well near the garden.
