Fengyi Lane

“Fengyi Lane” is situated between Sixiang and Xinxiang on Longmian East Road in the urban area. Fang Bao, who lived in Jiangning (now Nanjing), frequently stayed here when he returned to his hometown to take the imperial exams, pay respects to ancestors, visit relatives, and meet friends.

Fun Fact: Fang Bao (1668–1749), styled Fengjiu, also known as Linggao, and with the pseudonym Wangxi, was a renowned literary figure of the Qing Dynasty and the founder of the Tongcheng School of literature. Gifted from a young age, he could recite various classical texts by the age of six, and at twenty-four, he was hailed in the capital as the “foremost in the Jiangdong region” and as the “reincarnation of Han Yu and Ouyang Xiu.” He was imprisoned due to his association with Dai Mingshi’s case involving the book *Nanshan Collection*, but was later pardoned. During the Qianlong reign, he was appointed Vice Minister of Rites, successively serving as Vice President of the *Imperial Qing Literary Compilation* and the *Commentaries on the Three Ritual Classics*, and as Chief Editor of the “Classics and History Bureau.” He retired at the age of seventy-five. Fang Bao integrated moral principles with literary style in his scholarship and writing, pioneering the theory of “Yifa” (meaning and method), which laid the foundation for the Tongcheng School’s prose theory. His works are known for their rigor, elegance, simplicity, and naturalness, and are compiled under the collective title *Collected Works of Fang Wangxi*.
