The island of Tung Ping Chau itself falls within the expanded area of the Plover Cove Country Park. The main purpose of establishing the Tung Ping Chau Marine Park is to protect the coral and algae in its waters from damage caused by fishing activities.
The Tung Ping Chau Marine Park encompasses 270 hectares of coastline and sea area around Ping Chau in Mirs Bay. Its fringing coral reefs form the largest coral community in Hong Kong. Common hard corals include butterfly coral, potato coral, and stag horn coral; soft corals and gorgonians include bean coral, meat coral, and sea whip coral. According to incomplete statistics, over 130 species of coral fish have been found in Tung Ping Chau, along with other marine invertebrates such as starfish, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, and nudibranchs.
Before being designated as a marine park, Tung Ping Chau had long been a preferred destination for geography field trips for universities, secondary schools, and primary schools across Hong Kong. The rocks here host a variety of distinctive fauna, such as chitons and white-spotted swimming crabs; the island is also home to numerous bird species as well as various butterflies and dragonflies.
