The Sichuan-Shaanxi Revolutionary Base was the second-largest Soviet area in China. Hanzhong was an important part of the Sichuan-Shaanxi Soviet Area, especially as the “red communication line” that connected the Sichuan-Shaanxi Soviet Area to the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. It played a vital role in transmitting intelligence, transporting wounded soldiers, and delivering weapons and ammunition. The Sichuan-Shaanxi Revolutionary Base Memorial Hall has promptly protected and restored important cultural relics such as sites and remnants of the revolutionary base. It serves as an important site for educating young people about revolutionary traditions and patriotism. It also organically combines Hanzhong’s unique natural ecological tourism resources with its cultural and historical heritage, forming a distinctive tourism brand in southern Shaanxi. This has driven economic development in the surrounding areas and helped the people in the old revolutionary base areas achieve rapid poverty alleviation and prosperity.
The Fourth Red Army, the Second Red Army, the 25th Red Army, and the 29th Red Army all had years of activity here. Veteran proletarian revolutionaries such as Xu Xiangqian and Li Xiannian once lived and fought in Hanzhong. At the same time, the famous “red communication line” from Hanzhong to northern Sichuan played a pivotal role during the revolutionary war years. Currently, there are 1,800 revolutionary sites and relics within Hanzhong City, along with nearly 20,000 precious revolutionary historical artifacts, providing unique advantages for the development of red tourism.
