China Arts and Crafts Museum

Chinese arts and crafts have a long and rich history, shining brilliantly throughout the course of historical development and representing a treasured jewel in the treasure house of human culture and art. Works from different periods and categories carry profound historical and cultural significance, closely tied to their environments, modes of production, lifestyles, religious beliefs, and aesthetic values, forming a unique language of artisanal culture. Through various forms of expression, they showcase a rich tradition of arts and crafts as well as social history. Therefore, Chinese arts and crafts items are vessels of both material culture and national spirit. Both in form and content, they embody multi-layered cultural meanings and are an important part of the nation’s outstanding cultural and artistic heritage. In-depth study of Chinese arts and crafts culture holds profound and lasting significance.

  China Arts and Crafts Museum

The China Arts and Crafts Museum is a national-level museum. Officially opened to the public in 1990, it covers an area of 3,200 square meters and houses nearly a thousand contemporary masterpieces of arts and crafts. The exhibits include ivory carving, jade ware, wood carving, stone carving, ceramics, lacquerware, metalwork, gold and silver ornaments, lace embroidery, natural plant weaving, folk crafts, and more. Among them are timeless works by veteran artisans, professors, and Masters of Chinese Arts and Crafts, as well as top-tier pieces from national arts and crafts exhibitions since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, and award-winning creations that have received national treasures or gold awards over the years. It stands as the premier institution for preserving contemporary arts and crafts.

The China Arts and Crafts Museum brings together the finest examples of modern Chinese arts and crafts, earning international acclaim for its vast collection of exquisitely crafted, ingenious works and distinct national charm. Notably, four large jadeite treasures, recognized as “national treasures,” are particularly astonishing in terms of the preciousness of the materials used, the perfection of their designs, and the excellence of their craftsmanship. For example, the jade mountain “Dai Yue Qi Guan” (Grand View of Mount Tai) weighs 368 kilograms; the screen “Si Hai Teng Huan” (Joyous Dance Across the Four Seas) is made by intricately joining four slices, each 1.8 cm thick, cut from a piece of jade 74 cm long and 37 cm wide, forming a seamless whole adorned with elaborate carvings; the flower basket “Qun Fang Lan Sheng” (Gathering of All Beauties) features an exquisitely designed chain-like extension; and the incense burner “Han Xiang Ju Rui” (Fragrance Gathered, Auspiciousness Accumulated) uses screw joints to connect its upper and lower parts seamlessly, showcasing exceptional skill and considered a masterpiece. These four works are also the only ones since the founding of the PRC to have been honored with a State Council commendation. Other treasures include the one-ton “Ju Zhen Tu” (Gathering of Treasures), a jade mountain carving from Yangzhou, Jiangsu, and the white jade mountain “Da Qian Fo Guo Tu” (Great Thousand Buddha Land), inscribed by Liu Haisu. These represent the pinnacle of contemporary Chinese jade craftsmanship. Many of the museum’s treasures have been selected multiple times to represent China at international cultural exchange events organized by the government, such as “Chinese Culture in the USA” in 2000, the large-scale “Experiencing China” exhibition in Brazil in 2004, and the “Chinese Culture Exhibition” launched in South Africa in 2006. The exhibited works caused great sensation locally and received high praise from international audiences.

Since the founding of the People’s Republic of China, the Party and the state have consistently placed great importance on and shown concern for the development of the arts and crafts industry. In 1997, the State Council issued the “Regulations on the Protection of Traditional Arts and Crafts,” which played a positive role in rescuing, rationally utilizing, and promoting the inheritance and development of Chinese arts and crafts, ushering in another wave of growth for the sector.

As a first-class professional museum dedicated to Chinese arts and crafts, our museum continuously collects and displays new works, promotes emerging talents, explores, organizes, and researches valuable experiences in arts and crafts culture, and publishes fine art albums and professional journals. We organize domestic and international academic exchange activities and develop diverse thematic exhibitions centered on arts and crafts. The museum serves as a platform for both domestic and international masters and artisans to showcase new works, exchange information, and promote national culture. It provides the public and arts and crafts enthusiasts with the best venue to learn about and appreciate traditional culture. Furthermore, it contributes actively to promoting international cultural exchange and the development of China’s arts and crafts industry.
