The Tongling Baiji Dolphin Conservation Reserve is the world’s first semi-natural facility for the translocation and conservation of the baiji dolphin (Yangtze River dolphin). It is located in the interconnecting river between Heyue Islet and Tieban Islet in Datong Town, Tongling City, Anhui Province. The interconnecting river stretches 1,620 meters in length and 220 meters in width. The islets are lined with willows, offering a serene view under light clouds and gentle breezes. On the water, birds chase the waves playfully, while along the banks, dancing tree shadows create a picturesque scene—making it an ideal habitat for baiji dolphins.
Established in September 1985, the reserve covers an area of 409 acres. The protected zone spans from Sanjiangkou in Zongyang County to Digang Town in Fanchang County, encompassing a 110-kilometer stretch of the Yangtze River. This protected area primarily safeguards Class I and II nationally protected species in the Yangtze River basin, such as the baiji dolphin, Chinese sturgeon, finless porpoise, and Chinese high-fin banded shark.
On June 24, 2003, the State Environmental Protection Administration (now the Ministry of Ecology and Environment) approved the reserve as the National Environmental Protection Key Yangtze River Wildlife Conservation Center, with the protected waters covering the entire 800-li stretch of the Anhui section of the Yangtze.
It also serves as a teaching and research base for life sciences at Anhui University, a science education center for youths, and a national AA-level tourist attraction. With its high-tech features and engaging educational elements—especially the lively "Aquarium," the diverse "Specimen Museum," the world-renowned "Baiji Dolphin," and the adorable "Finless Porpoise"—it offers visitors a great destination for sightseeing, leisure, and recreation.
