桦皮岭在张北县东部，与沽源、崇礼、赤城接壤。距张北90多公里。桦皮岭主峰海拔2128米，比泰山高出八十多米，是坝上最高峰。
天下十三省，冷不过桦皮岭。这里年均气温只有4度，7月份为15度。无暑，夏天是最美好的季节。桦皮岭的背坡原始桦木葱葱郁郁，各种山花野草有一米多高。漫过一坡一岭。有野黄花、金莲花、野玫瑰、芍药花、干枝梅、凤帽菊、蘑菇等野生植物三百多种。这里山花烂漫，凉风习习，是夏季北方地区最佳的避暑地。
