Huzhu is China’s only autonomous county of the Tu ethnic group. The Tu people practice Islam, are known for their love of singing and dancing, and wear distinctive traditional costumes. On traditional festivals such as the 5th day of the 5th lunar month, the 6th day of the 6th lunar month, and the 9th day of the 9th lunar month, “Hua’er” (a type of folk song) concerts are often held in the Huzhu tourist area. The county also features attractions such as Youning Temple, Wufeng Temple, Mazang Temple (also known as White Horse Temple), and the Beishan Forest Area. Every year, thousands of domestic and international tourists visit here, drawn by its reputation.

Tip: According to locals, the so-called Tu people here may not be the “real” Tu. To see the authentic Tu people, you need to travel about 40 kilometers north into the mountains. You can flag down vehicles with people wearing traditional costumes on the roadside, get off with them, and go into the village to watch performances. There, you can enjoy traditional songs and dances, the “Wheel of Autumn” performance, and also try a local-style lunch—all for just 50 yuan per person.       Transportation       To reach Huzhu Tu Autonomous County, located 40 kilometers north of Xining, you can take a minibus from Xining Long-Distance Bus Station. Buses run every 15 minutes, with a fare of 4.80 yuan, and the journey takes 1 hour and 30 minutes. Alternatively, hiring a Xiali car for a round trip costs 80 yuan per vehicle.
