The South Lake Scenic Area was established in 1954 and is a natural scenic zone renowned for its landscape of mountains and water. Covering an area of 6.5 square kilometers with a water surface of 5,700 mu, the lake winds through seven mountains and eight valleys. With picturesque scenery of clear waters and green hills, birdsong and floral aromas, pavilions and waterside pavilions, it is a tranquil and beautiful destination on the outskirts of Hanzhong. The lake’s waters are emerald-hued, divided by the seven mountains and eight valleys into sixty to seventy bodies of varying sizes—some spanning hundreds of mu, others forty to fifty mu. Connected to one another, when boats speed across the expansive lake, the reflections of mountains, clouds, and trees ripple together on the water’s surface. Waves stirred up by the boat attract numerous birds that follow closely, chirping incessantly, creating a delightful experience.
“Of all the famous lakes through the ages, only South Lake is serene; its azure waters mirror a fairyland, as if drifting through a painting.” The lush greenery blanketing the mountains and the jade-green waters of the South Lake complement each other, making this naturally simple yet vividly beautiful mountain and lake scenery utterly enchanting.
The beautiful South Lake is embraced by layers of green hills cradling clear waters, while winding waters hug the green hills. Being here inspires poetry, sparks artistic flair, stirs deep appreciation for the scenery, and offers countless perfect spots for photos. It has been highly praised by visitors as: “natural beauty, beautifully natural.”
