Larnaca (Larnaca), anciently known as Kition, is an ancient city on the eastern part of the island. "Larnaca" means "sarcophagus" in Turkish, named after the many sarcophagi found in the area. Although Nicosia is the capital of Cyprus, for travelers, the most important city is Larnaca, as it serves as the country’s air gateway. Most tourists flying into Cyprus arrive here first before traveling to other parts of the island.
Larnaca was once an important Phoenician stronghold on the island but was damaged during the Greco-Persian Wars. After being taken over by the Turks, it gradually developed into a significant city and seaport, though it was later replaced by Famagusta. The area is home to the famous Hala Sultan Tekke, an important Islamic shrine located about 5 kilometers west of the Larnaca Salt Lake. It is said to have been built by the Turks in honor of Umm Haram, the aunt of the Prophet Muhammad. In 647 AD, she fell from her mule and died while accompanying the Arab forces during their attack on the region and was buried here.
Her tomb lies within the mosque, atop which stands a gate made of three large stones. Legend has it that the middle stone was miraculously transported from Mecca during the night and is a valuable historical relic. The Larnaca Salt Lake is also one of the island’s scenic highlights, serving as a habitat for numerous birds. When flocks of flamingos fly across the lake, their pink reflections shimmering on the blue waters create a uniquely beautiful scene.
The city of Larnaca lies along the coast, and in summer, the beaches are dotted with sun umbrellas. The city center is along the seaside promenade and the parallel Zinonos Kitieos Street. The seaside promenade features cobblestone paving and is lined with numerous restaurants and eateries; the parallel Zinonos Kitieos Street houses the Pierides Foundation Museum, making it a hub for the daily life and entertainment of Larnaca residents. At night, clubs, game centers, and discos light up the area, creating a lively atmosphere.
