Like other northern regions of Canada, Churchill also offers stunning displays of the aurora borealis, making aurora viewing an essential activity for visitors. Located at the intersection of three major biomes—the ocean, the boreal forest, and the tundra—the area boasts rich biodiversity, attracting 10,000 to 12,000 eco-tourists annually, including over 500 birdwatchers. Since the 1980s, it has become one of the best places in the world to observe migrating polar bears. Visitors can take horse-drawn sleigh rides to see these playful and adorable bears as they frolic in the snow, interact with each other, or swim in the water.
From July to August each year, thousands of beluga whales gather in the vast waters near Churchill, making it one of the top destinations in Canada for beluga whale watching. In addition, it is also a prime birdwatching spot, with the optimal season being from May to August when over 270 bird species can be spotted.
