The coast of Paphos is rugged with crashing waves and steep cliffs. A group of towering rocks rises dramatically from the sea—some like stalagmites emerging from the water, others resembling giant mushrooms standing in the surf. The largest rock stands about 30 meters high. This cluster of rocks is collectively known as “Romeos,” which means “rock” in Greek. Legend has it that the goddess Aphrodite (Venus) was born from the sea foam nearby, hence the name “Aphrodite’s Rock.”
Perhaps because Aphrodite was said to have been born from sea foam, there is a local belief that childless couples who pray to the goddess of love may be granted their wish. This belief attracts couples from around the world who come here to silently pray by the rocks, hoping to be blessed with a child of their own.
