The building was originally constructed in 1911 as the Coloane Municipal School run by the local government. It underwent several changes of use before being converted into a library in 1983. The Coloane Library building is a simple yet elegant single-storey Portuguese-style structure, featuring a six-pillared colonnade at the front. It bears resemblance to the former Macao Central Library (now the Civil Registry), and is classified as Macanese heritage architecture.
