中法战争后，清政府与法帝国主义相继签订屈辱的《天津条约》，《中法续订界务商务条约》等，法国取得开设《蒙自正关》特权。清光绪二十五年（1899年），法派工程师吉理然率人勘测滇越铁路路线，强占民居，强拆民房，引起民众公愤。
大屯人杨自元（彝族）很快与志同道合的沈恩彩，李弯三等组织数千民众，手执长矛，大刀，于5月14日晨，直逼蒙自洋关。法领事宋嘉铭等负隅顽抗，杨自元率众聚集茅枯，火烧洋关。
