Tomb of Duke Mu of Qin

Fengxiang city is famed for the Qin State, and East Lake owes its name to Su Shi. The Tomb of Duke Mu of Qin is located within the museum courtyard on Wenhua Road in Fengxiang County, just a few hundred meters east of the provincial-level scenic spot — East Lake Classical Garden. The site enjoys convenient transportation and an elegant environment. It also features the mystical “Ancient Drinking Pond of the Western Zhou” and the historical tale of “Duke Mu of Qin rewarding the wild man who stole his horse with wine to cure his poison,” as well as the burial mound of the “Three Worthies” mentioned in the “Odes of Qin · Yellow Birds” from the Classic of Poetry. Moreover, there is the beautiful mythological story of Duke Mu’s young daughter Nongyu and her husband Xiao Shi, a pair of celestial beings who rode a phoenix into the heavens. For thousands of years, these stories have been recorded, narrated, and chanted in novels, poems, and essays by literati across dynasties, and widely circulated among the people, thus enveloping the site in a profound historical

aura and an air of mystery.

The Tomb of Duke Mu of Qin covers an area of nearly ten acres. Its entrance gate, painted and decorated in an antique style, leads to the central part of the courtyard where the tomb mound stands over six meters above the ground. In front of the gate stands a tall stele inscribed with the four characters “Tomb of Duke Mu of Qin,” calligraphed in seal script by the prominent Qing Dynasty official and Governor of Shaanxi, Bi Yuan.

Duke Mu of Qin was a highly influential figure in the history of the Qin State and one of the wisest among the nineteen Qin rulers who had their capital in Yongcheng. His deeds are extensively documented in literary works such as “The Intrigues of the Warring States during the Eastern Zhou” and “Odes of Qin · Qin Wind.” Travelers from both home and abroad find great joy in exploring the ancient capital of Yongcheng, visiting this renowned historic site — the Tomb of Duke Mu of Qin — paying tribute to the ancient sages, and broadening their historical knowledge.
