Cluster of Choushu Archways
The Cluster of Choushu Archways is located in Choushu Village, Fujie Township, She County. Four four-pillar, three-bay, three-story archways stand in a row at the entrance of Choushu Village. One was built during the Tianqi era of the Ming Dynasty, while the other three were constructed during the Qing Dynasty. Among them, the “Praise and Glory Archway” commemorates three members of the Huizhou merchant family of Wang Tingzhang. The ancestors of the Wang family moved to Yangzhou, where they engaged in the salt trade and amassed great wealth—reportedly reaching tens of millions—earning them the nickname “Iron Gate Limit.” In the early years of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, the Wang family built the “Xiuyuan Garden” in Choushu Village, which hosted gatherings attended by poets such as Yuan Mei.
