Shengtian Temple

Situated about 30 kilometers east of Qinxian County in Shanxi Province, on the north side of Donglang Village. Originally constructed in the Jin Dynasty, it underwent repairs in the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. The site features two courtyards, including a mountain gate, middle hall, rear main hall, side halls on the east and west, and corridors on both sides. The middle hall is among the oldest structures, spanning three bays in width and depth, with an almost square floor plan, deep overhanging eaves, upturned corners, and a single-eave hip-and-gable roof with a gentle slope. The roof framework is fully exposed, with four-rafter beams resting on golden columns, creating a neat structure and refined craftsmanship. Under the eaves, the bracket sets extend two tiers of ang, using real ang brackets that directly support the weight of the roof—clear evidence of Song-style architecture. The interior murals were painted during the Ming Dynasty, depicting Buddhas, bodhisattvas, attendants, and others. The color palette mainly includes mineral blues, greens, cinnabar, and vermillion. The facial features are delicate, the postures dignified, the tones simple, and the artistry quite refined.
