Ancient Charm Meets Modern Vibes in Wulong
As you leave Decheng, pass through Guanwei, cross Maxi, and go through Gaoliang, you’ll see an ancient village—Wulong Village—nestled against lush green hills and fronted by a winding stream, rich in historical and cultural heritage, just one kilometer from Wulong Town. The village is home to 11 uniquely designed ancient structures known as “Wok-Ear Houses,” which feature distinctive shapes, orderly layouts, and impressive grandeur, embodying the classic characteristics of traditional Guangfu-style residences. The ancestral halls are adorned with elaborately carved beams and painted rafters, exuding a rustic elegance. A thousand-year-old banyan tree flourishes with dense foliage, while an ancient well offers sweet, flowing spring water. Beside the village lies a millennia-old winding path, on which stands a “Number One Scholar Bridge.” The village is now planning to build new, standalone residences that meet villagers' production and living needs while harmonizing with the surrounding pastoral scenery—letting these innovative, stylish new homes complement the unique ancient architecture.

In the process of creating eco-civilization villages, Deqing County has renovated and explored certain ancient villages with profound historical and cultural significance and distinctive ecological landscapes, transforming them into special eco-tourism villages that integrate culture, tourism, ecology, and local specialties. The ultimate goal is to fundamentally transform the backwardness of rural areas, develop the rural economy, and build a new socialist countryside that achieves productive growth, prosperous living, civilized rural customs, tidy villages, and democratic governance.

Building special eco-tourism villages is even more conducive to improving both the living and development environments in rural areas. Compared to general eco-civilization villages, eco-tourism villages have higher requirements for village appearance, sanitation, social ethos, and democratic management. At the same time, they generate greater and more visible economic benefits—strengthening village collective economies while also providing villagers with more opportunities for development. These efforts also better protect and explore the historical and cultural value of ancient villages. Currently, Wulong Village’s 11 Ming Dynasty “Wok-Ear Houses,” along with its ancient ancestral halls, bridges, wells, and banyan trees, have been well preserved and developed, radiating renewed charm. Nine modern standalone residences complement the unique ancient architecture, and a village where ancient charm meets modern vibes has emerged for the world to see.
