Fifty kilometers north along the upper reaches of the Nujiang River from Liuku, the Nujiang gradually reveals its majestic grandeur. At the 50-kilometer mark, the canyon suddenly narrows, with towering peaks rising on both sides and cliffs as sheer as if cut by a knife. The gorge stretches 10 kilometers in length, and at its narrowest point, it is only 10 meters wide. The river is strewn with bizarre rocks, and the turbulent water violently crashes against the boulders, producing a thunderous roar. In the Lisu language, this place is called “Lamadeng,” which means “Tiger Leaping.” At the northern end of the canyon is the Gejie River, while at the southern end, the Duduluo River rushes forth from the mountains, its rapids churning with white foam, merging the crystal-clear snowmelt from the snowy peaks into the muddy torrent of the Nujiang, adding an air of mystery to the scenery of Tiger Leaping Gorge. It is said that during the conscription drives of the Republican era, conscripts even leaped across the river from the east bank to the west bank of Tiger Leaping Gorge.
