Tianming Lake boasts crystal-clear, ice-cold water of unfathomable depth. It is surrounded by dense forests where wild animals roam freely. Rare and protected species such as the Lady Amherst’s pheasant, wild ass, golden monkey, red panda, and antelope make their home here year-round. The scenery of the lake area changes with the seasons—In spring, meltwater from snow-capped mountains flows into the lake, while azaleas dot the surrounding hills, creating a vibrant awakening for wildlife; in summer, blooming flowers burst forth amid lush greenery, with sea-like clouds stretching overhead; in autumn, the azure lake reflects golden foliage along the shores, under crisp blue skies; and in winter, when the land is frozen in silence, the area lies in tranquil stillness.
Tianming Lake is shrouded in mystery. Visitors must speak in hushed tones; loud shouting can instantly bring sudden wind, rain, or even hail, which is why it is also known as the Enchanting Lake. In truth, this phenomenon occurs because the lake is often covered in thick fog saturated with moisture, which condenses into precipitation when disturbed by sound waves. In the past, during severe droughts, villagers from the foothills would prepare offerings and rain gear, then journey to Tianming Lake to pray for rain from the heavens. After setting up offerings and shelters, they would sing and dance, and almost immediately, dark clouds would gather over the lake, bringing wind and rain.
