The Submerged Giant Buddha

The “Submerged Giant Buddha” is located in Baiyundula. At the southern end of the highway tunnel, on the tip of Foshan Zui, there stands a massive, egg-shaped rock atop the mountain peak, with its head reaching a height of 16 meters — 4 meters taller than the Leshan Giant Buddha in Sichuan. Legend has it that this Buddha is called the “Copper Oil Pot” (“Tongyou Fo,” also interpreted as “Fellow Traveler Buddha”). The area is surrounded by four Buyi ethnic villages, offering a rich ethnic cultural atmosphere. The northern side sits at a higher elevation, located upstream of the Shanao River. Along both banks of the river, there are hills, fields, and abundant vegetation with high coverage. Guiyang Municipality plans to establish a “Apricot Garden” in the region, which includes the Submerged Giant Buddha, as one of the six major theme parks under its Forest City construction initiative.

Judging from the distribution of tourist attractions in Guiyang, the most distinctive feature of the Submerged Giant Buddha is the “Buddha” itself. Centered around the giant Buddha and set against a backdrop of ecological environment, mountain landforms, and Buyi ethnic villages, it boasts a unique humanistic ecosystem: “the Buddha integrated into the natural surroundings, the natural ecology highlighted through its presence, and folk culture infused into the landscape of mountains, waters, and the Buddha.”
