Umm ar-Rasas Archaeological Site
The Umm ar-Rasas Archaeological Site is the best-preserved Roman-era urban site in North Africa and one of the most intact ancient Roman ruins along the Mediterranean coast. Originally a Roman military camp, it developed into a town around the 5th century AD. The site contains 16 churches, as well as remarkably preserved mosaic floors.

The buildings in the Umm ar-Rasas archaeological area are rectangular in shape, reflecting the typical architectural style of ancient Roman cities. These ruins date back to the Phoenician era around 1000 BC, and were later inhabited by Romans and Byzantines. The ancient structures represent the cultural and civilizational characteristics of that period. Architectural complexes such as temples, open-air theaters, markets, triumphal arches, amphitheaters, and baths showcase the classic Roman urban style. The overall architecture is magnificent and grand, embodying the distinctive features of ancient Roman construction and serving as a valuable historical and cultural heritage. These imposing Roman structures, with their smooth lines and exquisite carvings, are truly breathtaking.
