Archaeological Site of Sabratha
The Archaeological Site of Sabratha is situated 60 kilometers east of Tripoli, the port city of Libya. It was originally a trading post established by the Phoenicians and functioned as an export point for commodities from the African hinterland. Most of the major structures in Sabratha were built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, during the city’s peak period of prosperity. The grand theater, built along the seashore, stands out among these architectural marvels. It features three tiers, each supported by massive columns, and is adorned with white and pink marble reliefs.

Today, the theater has been restored by Italian archaeologists and hosts grand cultural performances every summer. However, over time, the pink sandstone walls of the theater have suffered significant natural erosion, particularly due to wind and wave action from the sea. Some parts of the structure often require on-site, temporary reinforcement. Coastal buildings, meanwhile, have gradually eroded and disappeared due to the relentless action of the sea. Numerous artifacts have been unearthed during excavations at Sabratha, including Byzantine mosaics, sculptures from the Roman era, and remnants of ancient Phoenician civilization.
