Introduction
Pankisi Gorge is located in northeastern Georgia and is a long, narrow valley that runs in a northeast–southwest direction. The gorge extends approximately 30 kilometers in depth, with its southern part being no more than 5 kilometers wide at its broadest point. Its northernmost end is only about 40 kilometers from the Georgian-Russian border. To outsiders, Pankisi Gorge is seen as a daunting "valley of terror."
