Black River Mountain

  Introduction
Black River Mountain is a famous mountain on Mauritius Island, located in the southwestern part of the island, adjacent to the coast. The highest peak of Black River Mountain is Piton de la Petite Rivière Noire, which stands at 826 meters. The mountain features undulating peaks and numerous streams flowing through the valleys. During the rainy season, these streams swell and rush noisily downhill, creating a breathtaking landscape.     On a slope called “Chimay,” there is a colorful rectangular patch of land, approximately 0.5 square kilometers in size. It displays distinct layers of red, yellow, purple, and orange soil, all vividly bright. Locals call this area the “Five-Colored Earth.” No vegetation grows here, and it is said that the “Five-Colored Earth” was formed when lava ejected during a volcanic eruption underwent chemical changes under intense sunlight.     Black River Mountain is home to a large community of Mauritians of Indian descent. On August 15th every year, local Indians dress in beautiful ethnic attire, play waist drums, and dance the Sega dance late into the night. Tourists are also welcome to join in the festivities.
