On the Happy Harbor Slope beneath Jiaozi Mountain stands a vivid, lifelike stone turtle with its head raised and back arched. Locals call it the “Stone Old Turtle.” Legend has it that in ancient times, Gonggong and Zhuanxu fought fiercely, shaking the Pillar of Heaven and tearing a hole in the nine celestial realms. Nüwa, in a desperate effort to repair the sky, smelted five-colored stones and managed to mend the damage. However, since four of the pillars supporting the heavens had broken, the sky remained in constant danger of collapsing. Fuxi told Nüwa that the only way to prevent the sky from falling again was to replace the broken pillars with the four legs of a sea turtle. Nüwa then went to the seashore, found the divine turtle, and knelt before it in earnest plea, begging it to sacrifice its four legs. Deeply moved by Nüwa’s selfless dedication to saving the world, the turtle willingly let her place its four legs at the four corners of the earth, replacing the shattered eastern, southern, western, and northern pillars of heaven. Since then, the sky was no longer in danger of collapse, the sun, moon, and stars resumed their normal courses, and life flourished once more across the land. Nüwa placed this heroic turtle by the river, honored it as the Ancestor of Longevity on Earth, and bestowed upon its descendants the blessing of a long life.
