Wulong Pavilion

Introduction       Wulong Pavilion is a small, delicate four-cornered pavilion located on a large rock beneath Wulong Pool in the Songgu An scenic area of Huangshan Mountain. It was built before the liberation.     Two stone pillars on the eastern side of the pavilion are inscribed with a couplet reflecting the doctrines of the religion, which reads: “Loyalty, forbearance, integrity, wisdom, virtue, justice, faith, endurance, fairness; broad-mindedness, filial piety, benevolence, compassion, self-discipline, thrift, truth, courtesy, and harmony.” This couplet contains a total of 20 characters. Since “20” is called “廿” (niàn), the pavilion is also known as the “Twenty-Character Pavilion.”     Nestled against the mountain and beside the water, the pavilion is surrounded by beautiful and serene scenery, which becomes even more tranquil and enchanting under the moonlight. The couplet carved on the two front stone pillars of the pavilion, “Clouds and mountains surround the two waters from all sides; stars and moon shine over the pool from the pavilion,” is a highly condensed and vivid description of the surrounding scenery. Taking this meaning, the pavilion is also called the “Star-Moon Pavilion.” Additionally, because it is built near Wulong Pool, some texts refer to it as “Wulong Pavilion.” From this pavilion, one can overlook the view of Wulong Pool.
