One Tree Hill

Guide Legend: It is said that One Tree Hill was once covered with many trees. However, the local Māori, furious over the European occupation of their land, vented their anger on this hill by secretly chopping down every tree under the cover of darkness. Although the local government tried to protect the trees, the united efforts of the Māori eventually led to all the trees being cut down over time, leaving only one at the summit. In fact, that single tree at the top wasn’t spared on purpose — it simply couldn’t be killed no matter what methods were used. Perhaps it was fate, so the Māori finally gave up. Whether by name, appearance, or origin, One Tree Hill is likely unique in the world. Introduction One Tree Hill, located within Cornwall Park in the northern part of Auckland, covers an area of 120 hectares and stands 183 meters high. It earned its name because there is only one pine tree at the summit. At the foot of the hill lie lush green grasslands and flocks of sheep, making it a great place to experience the rural charm of Auckland. This area was once inhabited by the Māori people, and remnants of a large 17th–18th century Māori settlement, including Māori-built fortifications, can still be seen today. At the summit stands a memorial to Sir John Logan Campbell, the founder of Auckland — also known as the "Father of Auckland."
