Immortal Riding the Sea
Introduction In the ravine between the stone stalagmites and Immortal Peak, there lies a massive rock. Its lower part resembles a —, while the upper part looks like a person standing upright. When viewed from Yuping Pavilion (or Tiandu Peak) to the north, one can see the figure’s clothing fluttering in the wind, flowing gracefully. When surrounded by surging sea of clouds, it appears as if the person is standing on a rock floating on the clouds, resembling someone crossing the ocean—thus it is likened to the legendary “immortal riding the sea to Penglai.” A modern poet wrote: “Where clouds surge, mountains encircle waters; a stubborn rock rides the waves in the wind. Gazing afar, where lies the end of the world? Better to watch the autumn tides at the Yellow Sea.”
