Immortal Drying His Boots
Introduction Near the left side in front of the Paiyun Pavilion in the West Sea, atop a peak there is a rock that looks like an ancient boot turned upside down on a stone platform, known as “Immortal Drying His Boots.” Legend has it that in ancient times, one of the Eight Immortals, Iron-Crutch Li, was captivated by the stunning scenery here and didn’t notice one of his boots slipping from under his arm. After he left, the boot remained there for years, eventually turning to stone and becoming a uniquely charming scenic spot. A modern poet wrote: “In days of yore, the goddess failed to mend the sky; Huangshan saw rain all day long. The immortal has gone, yet a wonder stays—An age-old boot dried in the sun.”
