Jinggangshan, with its magnificent revolutionary history and breathtaking natural landscapes, presents a perfect harmony of red and green heritage, and is a nationally celebrated revolutionary site and a 5A-level tourist attraction. The mountain is celebrated as the “Cradle of the Revolution” for its illustrious past. In the late 1920s, veteran proletarian revolutionaries such as Mao Zedong and others led the Chinese Workers’ and Peasants’ Red Army here, engaging in the arduous Jinggangshan struggle. They established China’s first rural revolutionary base, ignited the spark that lit the Chinese revolution, and pioneered the uniquely Chinese path of “encircling the cities from the countryside and seizing political power through armed struggle,” leading China’s revolution toward victory. This place also gave birth to the great Jinggangshan Spirit, inspiring countless heroes to carry on the fight. Since then, this once-obscure mountain has been enshrined in the annals of China’s revolutionary history and is hailed as the “Cradle of the Chinese Revolution” and the “Cornerstone of the People’s Republic of China.”
Jinggangshan, with its richly diverse natural beauty, is praised as a “Green Treasure House.” The wonders of nature have earned it the reputation of a “Natural Zoo.” Here, thousands of peaks compete in beauty, valleys teem with streams, vast forests and cascading waterfalls blend majesty, danger, seclusion, wonder, and charm into one. In spring, emerald mountains are blanketed in lush greenery and vibrant azalea blossoms, displaying stunning natural beauty. In summer, high altitudes keep temperatures cool, and dense forests offer refreshing breezes, sparing the area from the intense heat of midsummer. In autumn, golden firs and crimson maples cover the hills, creating a painting-like panorama of colorful foliage. In winter, the landscape is draped in silvery white, with ice crystals glistening like jade, evoking a scene straight out of northern China.
With over 86% forest coverage, Jinggangshan boasts a pristine environment and fresh air, with over 80,000 negative oxygen ions per cubic centimeter — earning it the title “Natural Oxygen Bar.” It is an ideal destination for tourism, summer retreats, leisure, and wellness. Furthermore, Jinggangshan, with its profound red cultural heritage, serves as a “spiritual homeland” for many. Spanning some 500 square li (about 166 square miles), the area is dotted with more than 100 revolutionary sites and relics, forming an open-air revolutionary history museum. It is a vivid classroom for cultivating sentiment, purifying the soul, elevating one’s state of mind, and strengthening conviction, as well as an important base for patriotic education and revolutionary tradition education.
In recent years, Jinggangshan has been awarded over 20 national-level honors, including National 5A-Level Tourist Attraction, National Civilized Scenic Tourism Area, National Sanitary City, National Advanced City in Landscaping, National Top 100 County (City) in Afforestation, National Advanced Unit in Comprehensive Social Security Management, National Advanced Unit in Conscription Work, National Advanced City in Sports, National Advanced City in Creating Civilized Cities, and National Model City for Supporting the Military and Aiding Civilians. The city successfully attracted three projects worth over 100 million yuan each, achieving a total industrial output value of 3.14 billion yuan from enterprises above designated size, with added value of 870 million yuan. It was also selected as one of the first “National Ecotourism Demonstration Zones,” awarded “China’s Top 10 Most Investment-Promising Tourism Destinations,” and initiated smart tourism and the Jinggangshan Ecotourism IoT project. Annual tourist arrivals surpassed 10 million, generating nearly 9 billion yuan in tourism revenue.
