Lake Taupo

Lake Taupo is New Zealand’s largest lake, situated in the central mountainous area of the North Island, south of Rotorua, at an altitude of 357 meters. It stretches 40 kilometers in length and 27 kilometers in width, with a maximum depth of 159 meters and a surface area of 616 square kilometers—almost as large as Singapore. The lake is surrounded by volcanically formed mountains and hot springs. In fact, Lake Taupo itself is a stunning sight, having been formed by a massive volcanic eruption so powerful that it blocked out the sun.

As the largest freshwater lake in Oceania, Lake Taupo is home to countless trout. Visitors can enjoy scenic tours as well as a variety of adventure activities, while also experiencing the warm and friendly local culture. Water-based activities are available year-round on the lake, including water skiing, parasailing, power boating, fishing, lake cruising, swimming, boating, canoeing, sailing, and scenic flights by seaplane. The town center lies right by the lake, offering plenty of dining and entertainment options.

Trout fishing is definitely a must-do activity, as this region is one of the world’s last remaining true wild trout spawning grounds. Local guides will quickly get you hooked on fishing, and many restaurants will be happy to cook your catch for you. Lake Taupo’s geothermal attractions include geysers, steaming volcanic craters, bubbling mud pools, and the world’s largest silica terrace. Other unique experiences include hiking to Huka Falls, playing golf in Wairakei, and kayaking to view the Māori rock carvings at Mine Bay.
