Sutherland Falls
Sutherland Falls (Sutherland Falls), referred to by the Māori as the “White Ribbon,” is situated on Mount Cook in the central-western part of New Zealand’s South Island, near the country’s most famous Milford Sound. Mount Cook rises over 3,770 meters, with overlapping peaks and breathtaking scenery. Its high slopes are dotted with patches of snow, while Sutherland Falls cascades down from a height of 580 meters, making it one of the tallest waterfalls in the Southern Hemisphere and also one of the world’s most renowned falls due to its 580-meter drop.

Sutherland Falls consists of three spectacular tiers: the first drops 229 meters, the second 248 meters, and the third 103 meters. The entire waterfall system flows down a 56-degree slope from a 580-meter-high origin. The falls plunge from two main cliffs on the mountainside, creating an immensely majestic sight. In addition to steep cliffs, the area surrounding the falls is covered with lush tropical rainforest. Sutherland Falls is named after its discoverer, Donald Sutherland, who found the falls while searching for a new route to Lake Wakatipu. It can be accessed via the Milford Track from the Quintin Public Shelter on New Zealand’s South Island.
