The museum presents an extraordinary, tense, and highly dramatic chapter of history—the period from 1945 to the 1990s when the United States and the Soviet Union, along with their respective allies, were engaged in political and diplomatic rivalry, conflict, and competition, commonly known as the “Cold War.” During this time, the United States, the United Kingdom, and France formed the Western Allied forces to oppose the Soviet Union. The museum comprehensively showcases key military and political aspects of the Cold War, as well as post-WWII and early 1990s Berlin.
Among the exhibits are the world-famous Checkpoint Charlie guardhouse and many other historical artifacts related to politics, the military, and daily life. In addition, several large permanent exhibits are displayed in the open-air area, such as a British Hastings transport aircraft and a French military train carriage.
