Shell Mound Site

Shell Mound Site
A provincial-level key cultural relics protection unit. Located about 2 kilometers south of Xiangzhou County in the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. It is one of the largest Neolithic shell mound sites discovered so far in Guangxi. The site extends from Nanshawan SANGOU in the south to Er’gou in Xiangzhou Town in the north, from the eastern bank of the Liujiang River in the west to the northeast gully of the old house at Fangjiaping in the east. It is approximately 150 meters long from north to south and about 100 meters wide from east to west, with layers about 1 to 1.5 meters high. Visible artifacts include shells of freshwater snails, clamshells, fossils of vertebrate bones, as well as sand-tempered pottery shards, stone axes, and stone adzes. Many of the stone tools are fan-shaped, tongue-shaped, or triangular. This shell mound site is currently the northernmost Neolithic riverside terrace shell mound site discovered in Guangxi, dating back about 10,000 years, and holds significant importance for the study of ancient human development history.
