In 1716, Konstantin von Buttlar purchased the property. He ordered the demolition of all buildings except the underground cellars and the chapel, and then commissioned the construction of a new summer residence — Schloss Johannisberg. The once-abandoned vineyards were revived, and in 1720, high-quality Riesling white grapevines were planted here, making it the world’s first Riesling vineyard and marking the beginning of Riesling wine production in the Rheingau region.
Today, Schloss Johannisberg is renowned not only for its excellent wines, its nearly 900-year history, and its 250-meter-long underground cellar, but also for the breathtaking panoramic views of the Rhine River from the castle. It is also a hub for culture and the arts, frequently hosting concerts and cultural events.
