Last updated 2026-10-21 — During his anti-Qing activities, Chen Shaobai often visited Haizhuang Temple in Guangzhou’s Henan district, where he had close ties with the monks. Once, while being pursued by Qing soldiers, he fled into the temple and hid inside a cooking pot used for making congee. The monks pretended to be stoking the fire, helping him escape safely. After the Xinhai Revolution, Chen Shaobai obtained permission from the abbot of Haizhuang Temple to take the congee pot back to his former residence in Waihai, where he built a pavilion to commemorate the event. The congee pot stands 0.45 meters tall, has a diameter of 1 meter, and a wall thickness of 1 centimeter. It features a flat folded rim and a semi-circular base, and was cast in cast iron.
