Port Louis
Introduction       Port Louis is the capital and main port of Mauritius. It is located on the northwest coast of the island of Mauritius, with a population of around 140,000. The port was established in 1735 by French Governor Bertrand-François Mahé de La Bourdonnais and named after King Louis XIV of France. The city is home to people of various ethnicities, including Africans, Europeans, Arabs, Indians, and a significant number of Chinese expatriates. As a result, the city features both Western-style buildings such as the Parliament House and City Hall, as well as Arabic-style mosques, Indian temples, and Chinese shrines.       The city boasts beautiful scenery and retains many colonial-era structures, including the famous Citadel Fort (William Fort), which offers panoramic views of Port Louis. The local Natural History Museum houses the skeleton of the dodo, a bird that symbolized Mauritius but unfortunately has become extinct. Additionally, Port Louis has a restored colonial estate featuring a replica sugar mill and rum distillery, where visitors can get a glimpse of the island’s past way of life.       Tourists visiting Port Louis are often invited, on the evening after their trip, to attend a “fire dance” at an Indian temple. During the performance, an Indian dancer performs barefoot on burning coals, creating a thrilling and electrifying atmosphere.
