The Yancheng Biosphere Reserve is home to 262 (226) (over 300) bird species across 54 families and 19 orders, making it an important wintering ground for various rare bird species in China, including cranes, grebes, herons, geese, ducks, storks, and gulls. The wetlands within the reserve serve as the largest wintering habitat for the globally endangered red-crowned crane. The area lies at the intersection of the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River, forming a broad transitional zone where fauna from both regions intermingle, as well as a transition between the warm temperate and subtropical zones. As a result, the animal—and particularly the avian—fauna exhibits characteristics of both northern and southern regions. The reserve also hosts numerous bird species of high economic value, such as the common moorhen and mallard.
The reserve is also one of the few regions in China with a high concentration of highly endangered species. By 2008, 29 species found here had been listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
