The Waitomo Glowworm Caves were formed approximately 15,000 years ago. Beneath the ground, layers of limestone form an extensive cave system adorned with various stalactites, stalagmites, and glowworms. Some of these caves are open to tourists, while others are reserved for expert research. Typically, visitors take a guided boat ride along an underground river. As you glide through the dark caverns accompanied by the gentle sound of water, you’ll soon notice flickers of light on the water’s surface ahead. It appears as though a shallow green river of light is flowing above you — thousands of glowworms illuminate the cave like stars, making you feel as if you’re standing under a “starry sky.” The green lights twinkle densely in some areas and sparsely in others. From a distance, it’s like gazing at a sky full of city lights reflected on the water, with the “stars” mirrored below, creating a breathtaking sight that showcases the wonders of nature.
