Hamburg Planetarium
North of Lake Alster in Hamburg, Germany, you can find an old water tower within Hamburg's Stadtpark, and this old water tower is now the Hamburg Planetarium—one of the most advanced planetariums in the world today. The building that houses the planetarium was originally a water tower, constructed between 1912 and 1915, with the project overseen by the world-renowned architectural master Fritz Schumacher. In 1929, the Hamburg Senate ultimately decided to establish the planetarium inside this water tower; it officially opened to the public in 1930.

The Hamburg Planetarium is perhaps one of the most unusual, or rather, the most distinctive planetariums on Earth. Its massive dome uses cutting-edge multimedia technology to create an expansive cosmic environment—stepping inside feels like instantly entering the vastness of the universe. In addition, the planetarium utilizes images, sounds, and live performances to showcase the wonders of the cosmos in a comprehensive way. This intuitive and highly immersive presentation style makes exploring the mysteries of the universe more direct and accessible for visitors.

At the Hamburg Planetarium, everything from children’s films to 3D movies depicting Earth’s history and future visions is undoubtedly a highlight. Visitors can even lie back in comfortable seats to watch and listen to this amazing visual spectacle.
